St. Edmund & St. Frideswide Parish Council Constitution (16 January 2021)

1) Purpose — The purpose of the parish council is to advise the parish priest and support him in the pastoral mission of the local Church. It will do this by formulating ideas and finding ways to implement them, facilitating communication with the parish, alerting the parish priest to problems and risks, etc.

2) Composition  The parish council will normally be limited to 8 people but should be broadly representative of the whole parish community. Although council members may come from a particular group engaged in the life of the parish, they are not simply representatives for their own group but for the whole community.

The following roles will need to be filled by the members: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary.

3) Normal term of service — 3 years. Parishioners may either volunteer to become council members by approaching the parish priest or the Chair or be nominated by others. The responsibility for appointing parishioners to the council lies with the parish priest.

4) The parish priest may invite other persons to attend a particular meeting of the council, either to deputize for a member or for any other reason.
